Serving the easternmost portion of the WMA ARRL section, the Central Massachusetts Amateur Radio Association (CMARA) and Worcester area radio clubs maintain a robust network of emergency nets. Operators throughout Worcester County tune into nightly VHF and UHF repeaters to exchange formal NTS traffic, practice net control protocols, and test backup emergency power capabilities.
These organized nets connect rural ham operators in the Quabbin Reservoir area with urban emergency management directors in Worcester and Fitchburg. During severe winter ice storms or summer flash flooding, these trained volunteers transition instantly into tactical communications teams for municipal emergency operations centers.
CMARA also sponsors regular foxhunts (radio direction finding), antenna build workshops, and public service communications for regional road races and charity walks. Their dedicated public service commitment showcases how amateur radio continues to serve as an indispensable safety net across Central and Western Massachusetts.
