Youth & STEM Outreach: Inspiring Next-Gen Amateur Radio Operators in WMA

Amateur radio clubs throughout Western Massachusetts are partnering with local schools, STEM programs, and Scouting groups to inspire a new generation of technical innovators. From Springfield and Northampton to Greenfield and Worcester, experienced radio mentors are introducing students to radio physics, electronics engineering, and satellite communications.

Hands-on workshops teach young students how to solder circuit boards, build directional Yagi antennas out of tape measures, and track amateur radio satellites orbiting overhead. Several local high schools have established ham radio clubs, allowing students to earn their Technician Class FCC licenses and make contacts with operators around the globe.

By demonstrating how wireless technology connects math, science, and public service, WMA clubs are preserving the heritage of amateur radio while equipping local youth with valuable STEM skills for future engineering careers.
