Hampden County Radio Association (HCRA): Decades of Excellence in Western MA

The Hampden County Radio Association (HCRA) stands as one of the cornerstone amateur radio organizations in Western Massachusetts. Founded to foster camaraderie, technical education, and community service among local radio operators, HCRA brings together enthusiasts across Hampden, Hampshire, and surrounding counties.

Each year, HCRA hosts dynamic events ranging from seasonal hamfests and technical build workshops to full-scale ARRL Field Day operations in the picturesque Pioneer Valley. Members actively mentor new ham radio operators—affectionately known as Elmers—helping newcomers pass FCC licensing exams and construct their first antenna arrays.

Whether experimenting with high-frequency (HF) contesting, satellite tracking, or digital modes like FT8, HCRA maintains a vibrant tradition of innovation. Through regular monthly meetings in Agawam and active local nets, the club ensures that amateur radio remains a thriving, essential asset for communications and emergency preparedness throughout Western Massachusetts.
