Rising 3,491 feet above sea level, Mount Greylock is the highest peak in Massachusetts and home to vital amateur radio repeater infrastructure. The Northern Berkshire Amateur Radio Club (K1FFK) and local repeater custodians have recently upgraded high-altitude repeater equipment on Greylock, dramatically extending line-of-sight communications throughout Berkshire County and adjacent states.
The mountain’s unique geography allows low-power handheld radios (HTs) in deep Berkshire valleys—from Pittsfield to North Adams—to reach across state borders into New York, Vermont, and Connecticut. Modernized antenna systems now feature enhanced surge protection, solar power integration, and digital modes including Yaesu System Fusion and DMR.
During severe weather or remote search-and-rescue operations in the Appalachian Trail corridor, the Mount Greylock repeater network serves as the primary communications backbone for emergency services and SKYWARN spotters throughout Western Massachusetts.
