As seasonal weather patterns bring severe thunderstorms, microbursts, and winter blizzards to the Pioneer Valley and Berkshire hills, Western Massachusetts SKYWARN spotters stand ready. Working in direct partnership with the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Norton, trained amateur radio spotters relay real-time ground-truth weather reports during high-impact storms.
When severe weather threatens Franklin, Hampshire, or Hampden counties, net control stations activate dedicated SKYWARN weather nets across linked regional repeater systems. Spotters report measured wind gusts, hail diameters, fallen trees, and flash flooding using standardized NWS criteria.
These ground observations give meteorologists critical confirmation of radar indications, enabling timely tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings. Through annual spring and autumn training classes, WMA radio operators continue to save lives and protect communities across Western Massachusetts.
